Rhinoplasty (Nose Job): Purpose, Procedure & Aftercare

The shape and structure of the nose plays a major role in facial aesthetics, and people who want to enhance their facial appearance  or who are not happy with their nose shape can opt for rhinoplasty surgery at Designer Bodyz.

Rhinoplasty, also known as a "nose job," is a surgical procedure that changes the shape of one’s nose by modifying the bone or cartilage. This is one of the most commonly performed cosmetic surgeries that provides varied advantages, including improved self-confidence and pain relief.

Dr. Parag Telang, founder of Designer Bodyz, the leading plastic surgeon widely known for providing the best rhinoplasty in India, has provided a thorough guide for anyone considering rhinoplasty surgery.

What is Rhinoplasty?

Rhinoplasty is a surgery done for enhancing the nasal features. It can also be done to change the way the nose looks, to make it easier to breathe, or to do both.

Reasons for Rhinoplasty

Rhinoplasty is performed to repair the nose after an injury, correct breathing problems or a congenital disability, or improve the nose's appearance.

The surgeon can use rhinoplasty to make the following changes to your nose:

  • a size change
  • an angle change
  • straightening of the bridge
  • reshaping of the tip
  • narrowing of the nostrils.

If one wants to improve their appearance rather than their health, one should wait until the nasal bone is fully developed. If one wants to correct a breathing problem (due to deviated septum), rhinoplasty  and septoplasty can be done at a younger age.

Rhinoplasty Surgery Procedure

  • The doctor will either give a patient a local or general anaesthesia. If the procedure is simple, one will be given local anaesthesia to the nose, which will also numb the face. One may also be given medication through an IV line, making one drowsy but keeping one awake.
  • With general anaesthesia, one will be rendered unconscious by inhaling or receiving a drug through an IV. Children are usually given general anaesthesia.
  • The surgeon will make cuts between or inside the nostrils while the patient is numb or unconscious. The doctor will separate the skin from the cartilage or bone before beginning the reshaping process.
  • If a patient's new nose requires extra cartilage, the doctor may take some from the ear or deep inside the nose. One may be given an implant or a bone graft if additional treatment is required. A bone graft is an addition of bone to the bone in the nose.
  • The procedure usually takes one to two hours. However, if a surgery includes multiple steps then it may take longer.

Rhinoplasty Recovery Procedure

The recovery process involves the following factors:

  • After surgery, the doctor may apply a plastic or metal splint to the patient’s nose. While the nose heals, the splint will help it retain its new shape. The doctor may also insert nasal packs or splints into the nostrils to help stabilize the septum, the part of the nose that connects the nostrils.
  • After surgery, the patient will be monitored in a recovery room for at least a few hours. If everything is in order, one will depart later that day. Because the anaesthesia will still affect one, one will need someone to drive home. If the procedure is complex, one may need to stay in the hospital/clinic for a day or two.
  • The patient is instructed to rest with the head elevated above the chest to reduce bleeding and swelling. One may feel congested if the nose is swollen or packed with cotton. Splints and dressings are usually required to be worn for up to a week after surgery.
  • One may have absorbable stitches, which dissolve and do not need to be removed. If the stitches are not absorbable, one will need to return to the doctor a week after surgery to remove them.
  • One may experience drainage and bleeding for a few days after the surgery. A drip pad is a gauze taped beneath the nose that can absorb blood and mucus. The doctor will advise how frequently one should change the drip pad.
  • One may experience headaches and puffiness in the face, and the doctor may prescribe pain medication.

All the side effects can be minimized if one gets treated by an experienced surgeon and follows the post-operative care carefully.
